Anxiety is rife, everywhere you look there is someone else expressing how overwhelmed and exhausted they are feeling.
We are so disconnected from one another that we need to have a special day, called the R U OK-day, just to remind us to ask someone else how they are.
It is sad to realise that we require that day to remind us that we are humans with feelings and that we have a fundamental need for interaction.
Pondering on how society is going and how removed we are from community living made me wonder:,’ What has changed from when I was younger, why is everyone rushing to get somewhere but never really getting anywhere. Why are we here and what the hell is normal?’
When Did Anxiety Become the New Normal?
Then I started to ask the question: ‘what is normal’? And from that question, came this reflection.
Normal is an illusion that we have been sold to attain.
Being normal is non-offensive, non-threatening and blends into the background.
It goes against everything that we are actually meant to be.
We are born to be unique.
We are born to shine.
We are born with unique gifts and we are here to discover and share them.
And when we buy into the belief that we are supposed to be normal, pushing and forcing ourselves into being normal, we suppress those gifts.
We suppress ourselves, away from the whole purpose and journey of life.
But being normal is an illusion.
Normal does not exist and that’s why it feels so uncomfortable when we allow being put in a box to contain who we are.
Trying to be normal is what creates disease and suffering.
Trying to be normal is what creates wars, separation.
Normal is what religions have been built from.
The only religion to follow is the religion of who you are and why you are here.
You want to find out how you want to feel.
How you want to make other people feel.
How you want to show up in the world.
How you want to leave the world.
How you want the world to see you once you have been here.
You have all the answers inside you and they are not normal.
Normal has been done over and over and over again and it has got us nowhere.
And I know that as you are reading this, you believe and know deep down in your bones that you are anything but normal.
But that you are trying to suppress yourself and force yourself into this illusion, into this lie that you are normal.
Normal does not exist.
We are everything but normal.
Therefore when we are trying to be something that we are not yet, it is uncomfortable when we look at the difference between who we are and who we can become and this creates anxiety.
Anxiety is future pacing: being in the now is too uncomfortable and being in the past is too hurtful.
Ask yourself, does this feel like my life? Am I trying to be something I’m not, just to please someone else, and I don’t even recognise myself anymore.
Be brave and be yourself and know that the anxiety will go.
